Project Overview:
Osbit Ltd, a UK-based offshore technology company, was awarded a prestigious contract by FTAI Ocean, a subsidiary of Fortress Transportation and Infrastructure Investors LLC (FTAI). This contract involved designing and constructing an innovative new well intervention tower system. The Smart Tower System developed by Osbit facilitates integrated riserless and riser-based well intervention operations in water depths up to 1,500 meters and is set to be installed on FTAI’s flagship DP3 vessel M/V Pride.
Project Background:
The Smart Tower System by Osbit is a cutting-edge solution designed to enhance offshore well intervention capabilities. It incorporates the vessel's existing crane into its deployment mechanism, boasting a 250-tonne active heave compensation capacity. This system is equipped with a dual-function heave compensation platform, ensuring stability for operations involving OWIRS, riser-based, and riserless intervention systems. Additionally, it supports a range of operations, including coil tubing, slickline, and e-line, while providing a secure pathway for personnel through an integrated walk-to-work system.
RSL’s Role:
RSL was selected by Wilton Engineering and Osbit to provide comprehensive Dimensional control and survey support throughout the project. This choice was made due to RSL's proven expertise and capability to deliver precise and reliable survey services.
Services Provided by RSL:
RSL’s involvement spanned the entire construction phase of the FTAI Smart Tower System, ensuring continuous and accurate dimensional control. The services provided included:
- Pre and Post Weld Inspections: RSL conducted thorough inspections before and after welding to ensure the integrity and precision of all structural components.
- Precise Marking of Cutting Lines: Accurate marking was critical for the precise fabrication of components, and RSL ensured all cutting lines were marked with utmost precision.
- Placement Points: RSL marked exact placement points for all elements, facilitating seamless assembly and integration.
- As-Built Surveys: Comprehensive as-built surveys were performed on all final products and their components to verify conformity to design specifications and ensure quality control.
Results and Impact
The meticulous dimensional control provided by RSL was instrumental in the successful construction and deployment of the Smart Tower System. The precision and reliability of the surveys ensured that all components fit perfectly and functioned as intended, thus contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the well intervention tower system.
The innovative features of the Smart Tower System, such as the guide wire and pod wire systems and the deck skidding system, were seamlessly integrated thanks to the accurate dimensional control. These features significantly reduced the necessity for crane lifts, expanded operational timeframes, and facilitated the direct loading of equipment into the well center, ultimately enhancing the operational efficiency of the vessel.
Conclusion:
RSL's comprehensive dimensional control survey services were crucial to the success of Osbit's Smart Tower System project for FTAI Ocean. The precision and dedication demonstrated by RSL ensured that the innovative well intervention tower system was constructed and deployed with the highest standards of quality and efficiency. This case study highlights the importance of precise dimensional control in complex offshore engineering projects and showcases RSL's capability to deliver exceptional survey support services.
