Case Study: Dimensional Control Survey for Kvaerner Facility Nyhamna Onshore Gas Plant
Client: OGN (Offshore Group Newcastle)
Project Start Date: 07/05/2014
Offshore Group Newcastle (O.G.N) commissioned RSL ONE LIMITED to perform comprehensive dimensional control survey work for the Kvaerner Facility at the Nyhamna Onshore Gas Plant.
Project Scope:
Offshore Group Newcastle (O.G.N) commissioned RSL ONE LIMITED to perform comprehensive dimensional control survey work for the Kvaerner Facility at the Nyhamna Onshore Gas Plant. This project involved the fabrication of 18 Pre-Assembled Units (PAUs) for the Shell-operated onshore plant. RSL ONE LIMITED was responsible for conducting pre- and post-weld surveys throughout the project, ensuring precise dimensional integrity and alignment. Additionally, full as-built surveys were carried out on each completed PAU to guarantee compliance with design specifications.
Project Context:
The Nyhamna Onshore Gas Plant, located on the northeast side of Gossa Island, plays a critical role in processing gas from the Ormen Lange field. The Ormen Lange gas field is situated 120 kilometers off Norway's west coast and was developed as a subsea tie-back to the Nyhamna facility. Here, the gas undergoes dehydration, hydrocarbon dew-pointing, and compression before being exported through the Langeled Pipeline to the UK gas markets.
Technical Details:
Total Weight: Approximately 4,300 tonnes
Individual PAU Weight: Up to 886 tonnes
Key Activities:
Pre-Weld Surveys:
• Conducted before any welding activities to ensure alignment and adherence to design specifications.
• Used advanced surveying techniques and equipment to measure and verify dimensions.
Post-Weld Surveys:
• Performed after welding to check for any deviations or distortions caused by the welding process.
• Ensured that the units met the strict tolerance levels required for safe and efficient operation.
As-Built Surveys:
• Detailed surveys of each completed PAU.
• Documented the final dimensions and positions to confirm they matched the design plans.
• Provided critical data for future maintenance and operational purposes.
Challenges and Solutions:
Remote Location:
Nyhamna’s remote location on Gossa Island posed logistical challenges. RSL ONE LIMITED mitigated this by thorough planning and coordination with local resources.
Precision Requirements:
The high precision required for the surveys demanded the use of state-of-the-art equipment and skilled personnel to ensure accuracy.
Weather Conditions:
Harsh weather conditions on Norway's west coast were anticipated and planned for, ensuring minimal disruption to the survey schedule.
Outcome
Accuracy: The precise surveys ensured that all PAUs were fabricated to the exact specifications, minimizing the risk of operational issues.
Efficiency: Timely completion of surveys contributed to the efficient progress of the overall project, allowing O.G.N to meet their deadlines.
Quality Assurance: The as-built surveys provided a detailed record of each unit, supporting ongoing quality assurance and operational reliability.
Conclusion:
RSL ONE LIMITED successfully delivered comprehensive dimensional control survey services for the Kvaerner Facility at Nyhamna, overcoming logistical and environmental challenges to ensure the precise fabrication and installation of critical infrastructure. This project underscores the importance of accurate survey work in large-scale industrial projects and highlights RSL ONE LIMITED’s expertise in delivering high-quality results in challenging environments.
