Case Study: Dimensional Control Survey Services for Heerema on the Leviathan Flare Boom Project

Client: Hartlepool Heerema
Project Start Date: 12/02/2018
Vent Boom Length: Over 130 meters
Installation: Lifted into position offshore by Sleipnir, Heerema Marine Contractors’ newest heavy lift vessel

Project Overview:

In the first quarter of 2018, Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG) was awarded the Procurement and Construction contract by Noble Energy for the Leviathan Vent Boom. This project was part of the larger Leviathan Gas Field development located approximately 125 km west of Haifa, Israel, and 35 km west of the Tamar field, in the Eastern Mediterranean Levantine Basin. The Leviathan Gas Field project aims to establish a subsea production system linking high-rate subsea wells to a fixed platform, designed to handle up to 2,100 million standard cubic feet per day.

RSL’s Role:

RSL’s services included:

1. Initial Surveys:
• Conducting baseline surveys to establish accurate reference points.
• Utilizing advanced laser scanning technology to capture detailed measurements of the construction site.

2. Ongoing Monitoring:
• Performing periodic surveys throughout the construction phase to monitor for any deviations or shifts in structure.
• Ensuring all elements adhered to the design specifications and tolerances.

3. Final Alignment:
• Verifying the final dimensions before the sail away to the offshore site.
• Providing precise alignment data to facilitate the successful lifting and installation by the Sleipnir vessel.

Challenges & Solutions:

• Precision in Measurement:
Challenge: Ensuring the Vent Boom’s dimensions were accurate to within tight tolerances.
Solution: RSL deployed state-of-the-art laser measurement technologies to capture and analyse measurements with high precision.
• Offshore Installation Coordination:
Challenge: Aligning the final structure accurately during offshore installation.
Solution: RSL’s comprehensive surveys provided Heerema Marine Contractors with reliable data to execute the lift and placement flawlessly.

Outcome:

RSL’s involvement in the Leviathan flare boom project significantly contributed to its success. The accurate dimensional control surveys ensured that the construction process met all design specifications, and the final offshore installation was executed without complications. The project culminated in the successful installation of the Vent Boom, demonstrating the critical role of precision surveying in complex offshore construction projects.

Conclusion:

The collaboration between RSL and Heerema on the Leviathan flare boom project exemplifies the importance of detailed and accurate dimensional control surveys in large-scale offshore construction. RSL’s expertise enabled Heerema to deliver a crucial component of the Leviathan Gas Field development, furthering the project’s goal of establishing a robust subsea production system in the Eastern Mediterranean Levantine Basin.
